How to choose a real estate agent

Choosing well comes down to comparing more than one agent on what matters: track record, fees, marketing, local knowledge and communication, instead of going with the first agent you meet.

Red flags to watch for

A great pitch isn't the same as a great agent.

An inflated price quote

Some agents quote high to win the listing, then condition you down. Ask for the sales behind any estimate.

Pressure to sign now

A good agent gives you time to compare. Being pushed to sign on the spot is a reason to slow down.

Vague fees or marketing

If commission or costs are hand-waved, get them in writing before you go further.

The vibe check

The most underrated question in the whole process: is this someone you can work with?

You'll be talking to this person for weeks, about the biggest asset you own. A good partnership matters as much as a good fee. Do they listen? Do they feel like part of your team?

That's where Real Easy will help. We're building a way to feel out the market, the numbers and the agents themselves, before anyone gets your details and starts selling to you. You control who you meet and when, and you walk in informed.

Frequently asked questions

How many agents should I compare?
At least 2 or 3. Commission is negotiable and estimates vary, so a single opinion tells you almost nothing.
Should I pick the agent with the highest appraisal?
Not on its own. Ask for the comparable sales behind the number. An inflated appraisal often becomes a conditioning campaign later.
How do I check an agent is licensed?
Every NSW agent must hold a licence. You can check any agent or agency on the NSW Fair Trading public register before you sign anything.
